SAMPLE LETTER TO MP

Dear (MP’s name)

I am a voter in your riding (or, I am the President of CEP Local ___ which has ___ members) and I want to express my concern about prescription drugs.

Many Canadians can’t afford the drugs they need because drug coverage isn’t universal and doesn’t cover everyone. The system is unfair because the level of help with drug costs depends on where you live and where you work. Meanwhile prices keep rising because controls on drug prices are inadequate. There is a recent report from the Canadian Health Coalition, called “Life Before Pharmacare”, that outlines the hardships Canadians are experiencing.

(Insert here your own problems or those of people you know e.g. losing their drug plan on retirement or because of lay-offs, the high cost of drugs and not being able to afford them, or having a hard time negotiating a drug plan, or keeping the one you’ve got.)

What we need is a universal, public drug program in Canada that would provide drugs in the same way that hospitals and doctors are now covered. Such a program would provide fairer drug coverage to all Canadians and also be better able to control costs.

I look forward to hearing from you on your own position on the need for a universal public drug plan.

Thank you for your attention,
