Unifor: A strong, new, bold union for Canadian workers

TORONTO – The new Canadian union being formed by the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union (CEP) and the Canadian Auto Workers union (CAW) will be named Unifor.  The name and logo were unveiled today during a packed press conference of 200 local leaders, members, community supporters and allies. Grassroots Solidarity at the Toronto Star

TORONTO-- Workers at the Toronto Star are sticking together as the paper undergoes lay offs and continues to contract out work. Stuart Laidlaw, chair of the unit that represents the Toronto Star newsroom within CEP local 87M, reports on recent acts of grassroots solidarity.

No to the wrecking of our Employment Insurance!

MONTREAL – In Québec, a large demonstration is being organized under the campaign against Employment Insurance reform. CEP members are actively taking part in the Québec Coalition against Employment Insurance Reform to try to counter the measures taken by the Stephen Harper government that run against the interests of workers.

Veterans Mistreated in Harper’s Canada

In Stephen Harper's military, the walking wounded may envy the dead. Soldiers killed in Afghanistan have been sent home to Canada in flag-draped coffins to be received by politicians, military brass, family and friends before going down the Highway of Heroes. But soldiers who sustain an injury or struggle with their mental health upon returning home from the horrors of war are left out in the cold.

With median CEO compensation reaching $5.6-million last year, the difference between regular employee and CEO pay has skyrocketed in recent years (2012's Top-Paid CEOs – Report on Business, May 27). In 1998, the top-paid CEOs received 105 times the earnings of average Canadians, a ratio that reached 189 times in 2010.
