Promoting Equality Winner

Congratulations to Lin Wan from CEP Local 27 who is the winner of the CEP Promoting Equality Scholarship. Lin's essay explores how unions unite women, celebrate women's successes, and enable women to experience greater flexibility in the workplace. Lin believes strongly that all people should have equal opportunities to pursue and work in jobs that they are qualified for and feel passionate about. In her essay, she explains how, together, women have the potential to change public opinion.
This can be done through initiatives that publicly share the struggles and successes of women. She further explains the challenges that many women with families face and suggests actions that unions can take to support female employees in their endeavors to achieve a work-family balance.
Lin is planning to study chemical engineering at McMaster University in Hamilton for the next academic year. She knows that her classes will be dominated by male students but regards this situation optimistically. She views it as an opportunity to distinguish herself from her classmates as well as a means to challenge current understanding about women in engineering.
Congratulations to Lin for her insightful reflection on women who pursue their passions -- whatever they may be -- and the role of unions in enabling all people in their personal and professional undertakings.
