stronger legislative lobbying with a proposed Canadian Construction
Unions Council (CCUC), though a labour lawyer says the deal is more
about giving Quebec unionized construction workers employment in Western
Canada.
Two unions representing Canadian construction workers are proposing a new national council they say will promote worker mobility and help ensure Canadian workers are hired before foreign workers at major job sites.
Should it be approved by members of Quebec's FTQ-Construction and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada, the new Canadian Construction Unions Council (CCUC) will be the largest group of construction-sector unions in the country, representing 80,000 workers.
MONTREAL -– FTQ-Construction and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP-FTQ) are proposing a new Canada-wide entity to their members: the Canadian Construction Unions Council (CCUC). The new organization will allow recruitment of members across Canada in periods of labour shortages to promote mobility and subsequently increase job stability. The final proposal was approved today by leaders of both labour organizations. The Council could start its activities in the coming months, provided the proposal is approved by members of FTQ-Construction.
More than 200 construction workers at the Mosaic Co. mine construction site at Belle Plaine are now represented by the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP).
