TORONTO-- Workers at the Toronto Star are sticking together as the paper undergoes lay offs and continues to contract out work. Stuart Laidlaw, chair of the unit that represents the Toronto Star newsroom within CEP local 87M, reports on recent acts of grassroots solidarity.
One of the country’s premiere incubators of young journalists is on the chopping block, as the Toronto Star looks to get rid of the radio room as part of its broader effort to cut costs amid falling ad revenue.

TORONTO -- The Toronto Star made a devastating decision today to contract out its page design and layout to Pagemasters, as well as other cuts across the newsroom - including its library - and in advertising.
In all, 44 jobs could be lost.
"Obviously newspapers face some economic challenges, but cutting jobs threatens the quality journalism that is at the root of any profit margin," said Peter Murdoch, Vice-President Media for the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union, which represents almost 500 workers at the Star.
March 4, 2013 - Transcontinental Media is forcing its Canadian freelance writers and photographers to sign a contract that strips them of all rights to their work, without providing reasonable compensation, or even the chance to negotiate.
The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union (CEP) and its freelance local, the Canadian Freelance Union (CFU) stands in deep opposition to this move.
The next CEP Media Council Conference will be held at the Delta Ottawa City Centre from May 1 - 5, 2013. Quebecor Inc. announced Tuesday that 500 jobs will be slashed at Sun Media, including two production facilities in Ottawa and Kingston.
At the Ottawa Sun newsroom 10 people have been affected by job cuts, including six copy editing and layout staff, two people in the Sun's entertainment section and the Ottawa Sun's editor in chief Mitchel Axelrad, sources say.
TORONTO – The job losses announced this morning at TVO will be harmful to the quality of content produced by the station. In an announcement this morning, TVO said it is cutting roughly 40 jobs and long-standing shows such as Saturday Night at the Movies, Allan Gregg in Conversation, and Big Ideas.
