Ottawa shooting

Our thoughts today are with the people of Ottawa as they grapple with the tragic events of yesterday.

As we followed it on the news yesterday, and read about it in this morning’s newspapers, we relied on the incredibly skilled and dedicated journalists of this country to provide reliable information.

These men and women, many of them members of Unifor, were quick to confront the danger that was defining the day – and to do so in a professional and responsible manner. In the days and weeks to come, all people in Canada will rely on the vital work of journalists as we come to grips with what happened and determine thoughtful responses. They shot video and took photos that stunned a nation. They reported facts, not speculation, and thoughtful analysis, not fearful rage.

Across Ottawa, workers were affected by the violent events. From the Chateau Laurier Hotel, to the House of Commons building, workers – many also members of Unifor – were frightened for their safety, but worried about their co-workers and neighbours, as well. As they sought safety for themselves, they reached out to help each other as well.  With generosity of spirit and strong resolve, they rose to the occasion.

In the end, it is that very Canadian instinct to help others, along with the responsible work of this country’s journalists, that will guide us in the days to come.
