Own It! campaign opposes privatization in Saskatchewan

Unifor members in Saskatchewan have partnered with other workers’ organizations to re-launch the Own It! campaign.

Started in 2015 to deal with the threat posed by the Sask Party government’s neglect of Crown corporations and public services, the 2017 re-launch puts a human face on the impacts of the government’s dangerous austerity agenda.

“Our Crown corporations were built by the people of Saskatchewan to deliver quality affordable services that generate dividends and guarantee good jobs in the province,” said Joie Warnock, Unifor Western Director.

The Own It! website, ownyoursask.ca, lets people send a letter to their local town or city council and MLA.

“Here in Saskatchewan we cherish our Crowns and public services, and residents all over our province rely on them every day. We can’t sit by while the provincial government privatizes them, putting them in the hands of corporations who will put profit first — and service and safety second,” said Larry Hubich, president of the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL).

This new phase of Own It! follows a successful petition drive in the Fall of 2015 that saw nearly 20,000 signatures being submitted to the Legislature calling on the provincial government to say YES to Crowns and public services. It remains the second-largest petition in Saskatchewan’s history.
