EDMONTON, June 4, 2015 /CNW/ - An impasse in bargaining between Unifor Local 21-A and AT Films Inc. has led the union to apply for mediation. AT Films is a wholly owned subsidiary of British Polythene Industries P.L.C.
"The current collective agreement is unworkable and needs an overhaul to be coherent and fair to both parties," said Unifor Local 21-A President Mike Kapalka. "We are intent on making changes to the current agreement, and we're prepared to go to mediation or consider job action to achieve a fair deal."
Unifor says that AT Films has stalled on addressing key issues and the employer's proposals do not reflect the contributions made by its workers. The parties have been negotiating since December 2014.
AT Films Inc. researches, designs, and manufactures polythene film products for the horticultural, agricultural, and construction industries. Unifor members at AT Films manufacture, fold, and distribute polythene films products.
"Our members are critical to the success of AT Films, and our collective agreement should reflect that," said Kapalka.
AT Films Inc. is the first Canadian company to join a prestigious group of six businesses within British Polythene Industries PLC, whose head office and manufacturing facilities are located in Edmonton. A conversion site is located in Westlock, Alberta.
Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing more than 305,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
