THUNDER BAY - After 121 days on a picket line, 65 workers at the Port Arthur Health Centre are taking a stand against an employer who refuses to negotiate.
“The doctors who own this Centre have repeatedly refused to return to negotiations for more than four months now. Enough is enough,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. “We gave plenty of notice that if they did not come back to bargaining, we would shut the clinic down, unfortunately that means disrupting service to patients.”
Hundreds of union and community members from across Ontario and Manitoba will join the workers Wednesday starting at 7 am to show solidarity for Local 229 members, as they protest unfairly low wages, and precarious working conditions.

On August 5, Unifor’s National President called the clinic to inform them that they should reschedule all patients starting tomorrow. Unifor regrets any inconvenience to patients who deserve the best health care, and asks that patients demand the clinic negotiate a fair deal with these 65 women.
More than 7000 community supporters have shown solidarity with these workers by signing a petition or emailing the Centre’s CEO, John Marrello at @email, demanding a fair deal
