The Central Newfoundland Labour Council, whose President is Brother Gary Healey, President of Local 59N, organized through its Labour Day Committee a very successful weekend celebrating Labour Day 2002. It is the 82nd year that festivities have been held and is the longest running Labour Day event in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The theme of this year's events was "Medicare - Ours to Protect".

The Labour Day Committee, chaired by Local 63 President, Brother Gary Tremblett, hosted a full program of events. The schedule included a Slow Pitch Co-ed provincial tournament, and a Family Day on Saturday, which saw a huge turn out of young people participating in a scavenger hunt with major prizes, face painting, games and many other events. Sunday was Senior's Day and included a bus tour, bingo and a wine cheese party.

But the big day was Monday and Grand Falls-Windsor celebrated one of its biggest parades ever. It began with a children's bicycle parade, followed immediately by the main parade and included more than a dozen floats and over 500 people walking. Locals 88, 63, 60N and 59N entered floats with two CEP Locals, 88 and 63, taking home awards for Best Overall Float (Local 88) and Best Mill Float (Local 63). Local 88 also won the Per Capita trophy for having 73% of its members out on parade. The Newfoundland Association of Public Employees, the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Newfoundland and Labrador Nurses Union won the award for Best Non Mill float. Other unions and fraternal organizations entered floats as well

After the parade, guest speakers, including Regional Vice President (Atlantic) Max Michaud, Elaine Price, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour and federal and provincial politicians, addressed the people on the importance of Labour Day and the appropriateness of the theme of protecting Medicare.

Many CEP members participated in ensuring that Labour Day remains a day of significance for workers and are to be congratulated. Hats off to the CEP Locals in Grand Falls-Windsor, NF.
